What are some advantages of scientific nomenclature over common names.?
I respectfully disagree. There're a lot more reasons for it than just personal convenience. I think canislupus emilyrose, and redhair got it more exactly... Report Abuse

Reply:You say badger , I say badger but we may be talking about different species, I say Meles meles and theres no doubt. You say otter I say otter, your talking about Lutra candensis and I'm talking about Lutra lutra. You say mink , I say mink your talking about Mustela vison I'm talking about Mustela lutreola.
Reply:It's systematic and informative. In the case of biological taxonomy, the scientific name of a species provides information about the evolutionary relationships of the species (i.e. you can easily find out what else is in the same genus). In chemistry, scientific names tell you the chemical formula and molecular structure of the compound. It's far easier to learn general rules about nomenclature than it is to look up or memorize every individual case.
Reply:Scientific nomenclature is a standard. You can always tell what object a person is talking about if they use SN. Common names can be common for one group of people and different for another. You don't always know what a person is talking about with common names.
Reply:it's universal
Reply:Well, scientific names are in Latin. So it's in one language, and therefore, everyone can understand it. For example, every language has its own name for different animals, but when a bunch of scientists meet together, they can all use the same name. Also, people learn the scientific name and they know what other people are talking about. Basically, a uniform system helps to avoid confusion, and since Latin is a dead language, there's no favoring of languages, so everyone has to learn a new language, not just certain people.
Reply:with scientific nomenclature people from different regions and different languages can understand what is being talked about, also in scientific journal and publications, scientists would have no confusion
