What were common names in the 1920's and 1930's?
The Social Security Administration web site provides the top 1000 baby names by decade.

The top 10 boys names in the 1920s (in descending order) were: Robert, John, James, William, Charles, George, Joseph, Richard, Edward and Donald. The top 10 girls names in the 1920s were: Mary, Dorothy, Helen, Betty, Margaret, Ruth, Virginia, Doris, Mildred and Frances.

The top 10 boys names in the 1930s were: Robert, James, John, William, Richard, Charles, Donald, George, Thomas and Joseph (Edward was now #12 and Thomas was not in top 10 in the previous decade). The top 10 girls names in the 1930s were: Mary, Betty, Barbara, Shirley, Patricia, Dorothy, Joan, Margaret, Nancy and Helen. There is more change in girls names from decade to decade (Barbara (#18), Shirley (#17), Patricia (#29), Joan (#60), and Nancy (#62) were not in the top 10 in the 1920s).
