How come we have a common name for light red and light black?

Eg pink and grey in the English language, yet all the other main colours don't? Or is it just that my brain isn't functioning this afternoon and I can't think of any?

How come we have a common name for light red and light black?
I understand perfectly well what you're saying. I've always wondered about pink. I hadn't thought about grey, though.

Yes, some light colors may have other names like the ones some people wrote here but saying 'light green' or 'light blue' will always be right, whereas 'light red' or 'light black' is NEVER said.

I think it doesn't only happen in English..

A star for you..:-)
Reply:Quite a few colours are used with "pale" as well as "light", but violet and white is "mauve". Pale blue is "azure". Light brown is "auburn", "ecru ","beige", "barley" or "gossamer". Light yellow can be "lemon" ,"primrose","straw" or "cream". It often depends on the intensity of the shade.

You might be interested in reading about colours in the following article which gives the reasons why colours in English have the names which they have.

http://www.chromophilia.eu/?p=103
Reply:Light orange = apricot or peach

Light Green = mint

Light Purple = Lilac

Light brown = beige

Light Yellow = lemon
Reply:Purple -- mauve

Orange -- peach

Green -- eau de nil

Yellow -- lemon, cream

For blue we have both indigo and blue in the spectrum, the latter being a lighter form of the former.

We in fact have a dazzling array of words to describe colour in the English language -- something which we have in common with other European languages.
Reply:I think it's the latter.
Reply:I can't think of any either - too complicated for a thursday afternoon when its only a couple of hours til work finishes and the drinking starts!
Reply:The same reason we have a name for yellow mixed with blue-green. Pink and red, grey and black are different things as they are the colours mixed with white-which is also a colour.
Reply:In both cases the amount of white would determine the shade.
Reply:I'm not sure about the pink thing - your right - baby blue is the closest i can think of

By the way Black Grey and White are not colours - they are shades - its a different thing
Reply:Do we, I did not know that, tell me if you know. In my opinion red in all shades as black, are red and black. I think that is a matter of opinion. You must be some kind of an artist? Or am I missing something here with the colours, obviously? Or is this a riddle???
Reply:When we say red or black - we assume them as a medium shade so we say light or dark if we want to say other than that. Maybe crimson or scarlet is a particular shade of red.

I just flipped through the phone book and took the first five names I saw that fit your criteria. They all happen to be English or Scottish, so if you want you characters to have different ethnicities, you'll probably have to find some last names that are a bit less common.

Have there ever been names that somebody made up and then became common?

Like let's say 400 years ago I decied to have a child and make up the name Katie. And now it's popluar.

Has that ever happened?

Duh I know all names started some how but I mean whats the most recent one?

Have there ever been names that somebody made up and then became common?
I think Jayden was
Reply:Actually, the answer posted by "Heb. 12:1-3" is wrong. According to the "Think Baby Names" website, the name Jaden IS a modern invented name.

Jaden/Jadon is NOT in the Bible.

Jalon is. (In the Bible, Jalon was a descendant of Judah).

"Forever Love," Leah is also a name in the Bible.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Other (girl's) invented names include, Neveah, of course, and...

--Acquanetta

--Aida

--Anitra

--Araminta

--Arnelle

--Beyonce

--Clea

--Cora

--Dulcinea

--Fiona, Fiora

--Rip

--Tannon, and

--Villard.

In 1991 there were only 8 in the entire USA. And now its getting more popular. I think its 200th-ish most popular.

The variations on Aidan (which is actually a rather old Irish name) are new - Hayden, Jadeyn, Kadeyn, Graydon.

A lot of these lynn-names have been made up too - like Avalyn. Their getting more popular although theyre not really that commonplace.

The geographical names like Boston, Paris, London, Cheyenne, Washington - whatever.
Reply:Recent: Jayden-it's a form of Jaydon that is also of American origin. I'd say most names in baby books that have American origin are made up.

Edit: Aidan is actually an Irish name so it's not made up, just not common in the US.
Reply:Michaela/Makayla/Mikala, etc. I hear that one all the time lately, and it is just a feminization of Michael. By the way, Aiden is not a made up name. It is a very old Gaelic name that just became popular here recently.
Reply:Unfortunately, Nevaeh is the epitome of what you just described. It was the 31st most common girls name for 2007. What a shame and a perfect example of the lemming mentality of Americans.
Reply:Nevaeh. Heaven spelt backwards.

Its become really popular, and someone somewhere decided it sounded nice and used it as a name.

Other people heard it and liked it too, it became popular.

Personally I can't stand it.
Reply:Jayden is not made up, because it's in the Bible, except it is spelled Jadon. I think that Jace would probably be one of the made up names. It sounds like Chase and Jason combined.
Reply:Most of the girls names that are botanical are probably made up.

Rose, Jasmine, Holly, Ivy, Violet, Daisy, Lily, etc...
Reply:Jayden for a boy or girl

Cameron for a boy or girl

Leah for a girl

sooo yeah

it happens often
Reply:Nevaeh

"Heaven" spelled backwards

someone just made it up and now its in baby name books.
Reply:Well names llike Kah'lil and Canyon
Reply:Neveah.. yuck
Reply:I'd have to say Aidan.

Where can I find the 300 most common male and female names (including adults/children, not just new babies)?

I am looking for a list of the most popular male and female names in the UK (or England, if UK as a whole is not available). I can find plenty of places listing the most popular baby names for a year, but not something with a list covering the population as a whole, rather than just new babies' names.

Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction.

There is no common name.

My sons name is preston..... so I always call him my preston pumpkin poo.

When he fpasses gas.... I ask him if he is making toot toots

I call blankets bankies....... or snuggies....

And then I also am always rhymning things I say..... like are your comfy snufy or cutie pootie and so on.
Reply:do you know Baby talk is more effective than regular speech in getting an infant's attention. Studies have shown that infants actually prefer to listen to this type of speech

Shore and other researchers believe that baby talk contributes to mental development, as it helps teach the child the basic function and structure of language. Studies have found that responding to an infant's babble with meaningless babble aids the infant's development; while the babble has no logical meaning, the verbal interaction demonstrates to the child the bidirectional nature of speech, and the importance of verbal feedback.

here are some ones i can think of:

baba (blanket or bottle)

What is the scientific or common name of this plant?

My grandmother has always had this plant that opens in the day and closes in the night. I got some of the plant from her and have been growing it. It is a purple color on the undersides of the leaves and has white flowers. I have never seen this plant anywhere else but I finally found one at Walmart last St. Patrick's Day. It was labeled "Clover" with no scientific name. When I search clover on the web this plant never comes up. Does anyone know the name?

What is the scientific or common name of this plant?
Oxalis?

Why are the last names Brown, Black, White, Gray and Green common, while other colors are not for last names?

I've known of a Dr. Black, Ms. White, my uncle is Mr. Green and I can recall a few Grays or Greys but I have never come across a Mr. Pink or Mrs. Orange. Why?

Why are the last names Brown, Black, White, Gray and Green common, while other colors are not for last names?
Because nothing really rhymes with "orange".

Imagine how frightful that would be when writing a poem!

EDIT:

I suddenly thought of something.

Obviously someone made up the system of surnames, or a group of people just decided to give themselves surnames.

I guess those people just liked the colors brown, black, white, gray, and green more than pink or orange.
Reply:Rose is a last name. In French there are names like Larose, Latulipe, Bouquet, Lafleur (flower), etc.

And how about William of Orange?

In German, Blau (blue) is a family name.
Reply:I've heard of a couple of Lavenders. lol Who knows. Good luck on finding your answer.
Reply:cause those colors are not last names. Plus who would want a last name be pink or purple or something

Need help with Girls names, we don't like unusual names but we also don't like common names. Any Suggestions?
It sounds to me like what you want is a good standard name that doesn't happen to be popular right now. Something you can do is google a website that shows the most popular baby names by decade. In the 1930s for example popular names were Helen, Marion, Esther, Mildred, Norma, Loraine, Dorothy, Barbara and lots of others. If you find a name you like that was popular over a number of years or decades but not lately you will have a name that doesn't seem freakish and will probably become popular again but not until after your girl has had a chance to be the only one in her class.
Reply:I totally know you mean!!!! I went thru the same thing and finally just stuck with a name i loved with a good meaning.... giving my son the name NATHAN.... i just love the way that looks.....

Try taking two common ordinary names you like and combine them.... like Christina and Tiffany you can have Christany. I LOVE that name! Brandy and alyssa are both names i like but to change it up i liked Bralyssa. i think Braelynn is a gorgeous name! So I hope that helped a bit....

Good luck! Naming a baby is a hard huh?! It took me to the day my son was born to have his name! :D
Reply:Do a normal name but spell it different. My nephews name is Isaiah but we spelled it Izayah to match his dad Issac which is spelled Izac. A girl Ashley-Ashleigh, Jessica-jezica, Brianna-Breanna, yeah you get the idea Oh yeah combining is good. Shela + Denise=shenise
Reply:Matilda, Claudia, Tiffany, Natalie.

Reply:combination of names would help. like combining your husband's name and yours. sometimes it would sound good but sometimes not. and definitely you would go back in getting the basic names. yet it's still worth the try. goodluck for the pick!

I've got great way to pollute the nutritional drink of carrot juice. Simply add Vodka. Now, If I'm out and about and want to order one of my sinful concoctions, what should I ask for? Bartenders might know this one.

They are all tuberous begonias.
Reply:The first two look like Begonias to me, based on the shape of the flower and what I can see of the leaves. You might try to Google that for clearer information.

I can't identify the third one from the picture, is it a hanging plant, vine?
Reply:Don't know about 2 %26amp; 3, but 1 looks like a double begonia.

Reply:Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but these 12 names are the first names of the only 12 people to have walked on the moon (all American men born in the 1930's (11) or 1920's (Alan Shepard)). Ref: google, Wikipedia, and personal knowledge. I met or heard about some of the astronauts when I was a kid growing up in the Air Force. Some of them didn't go by their first names, as you know.

Is Angelita a common name in the Philippines?

I was just wondering because the only other females I ever meet that share my name are always from the Philippines. If so, do you know how it became so popular there?

Is Angelita a common name in the Philippines?
Yes, you're right. Angelita is a common name in the country but as to how it became so, I don't have any idea. Probably because most people are Catholics and Angelita comes from the word "Angel". Or, it could have evolved from a long time TV series on Channel 9 (RPN) entitled "Ang Mga Maga Ni Angelita". You know how Filipino mothers love to adopt names for their child after a star or a "bida".
Reply:Yep, but no one can beat the name Maria, Juan and Inday...:)
Reply:yes it means angel girl, it is popular for girl's name usually attached to angel because filipinos are very attached to religion especially to roman catholic church, which recognizes angels.
Reply:yes, it's common, along with this name is Angel, Angeline

pero eto ang matindi..ang pinaka-popular..

alam mo kung ano??

INDAY at DODONG..kalain mo yan..
Reply:it's a common name not only in provinces, but also in cities.
Reply:It's a common name in provinces
Reply:no
Reply:yes!

Reply:yes, "angelita", together with "angela" and "angelica" are very common names. (names that start with "angel")

why?

maybe because filipinos are very religious and have strong beliefs.

What is the common name for Datura Inoxia flower?

This is a large, white, night blooming flower in the form of an annual shrub, not to be confused with a vine of the morning glory family which is called moonflower. The blooms do not hang down like angel's trumpet.

What is the common name for Datura Inoxia flower?
Datura inoxia (angel's-trumpet, thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian-apple, moonflower, sacred datura, toloatzin, or toloache) is a species in the family Solanaceae. It is native to the Americas, and introduced in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The scientific name is often cited as D. innoxia.
Reply:Datura Inoxia is variously called angel's-trumpet, thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian-apple, moonflower, sacred datura, toloatzin, or toloache. Although it is not the same as the various plants you mentioned this is due to different people giving different plants the same name. If you want to be exact with any plant you'll have to use the latin name.
Reply:it is sometimes known as the Devils trumpet.
Reply:Angel trumpets.
