What is it called when an object's common name is the same as its most famous brand name?

Here are a few examples of what I mean:

Ink correcting fluids being known as 'Tipex'

Some people calling any vacuum cleaner a 'Hoover'

Or even sometimes when people call any mp3 player an 'iPod'.

There are many more examples - I just can't think of them right now :P

I'm pretty sure that there is a technical term for this phenomenon. Anyone know what it is?

What is it called when an object's common name is the same as its most famous brand name?
Yes, they are words that were formerly trademarked, but have become synonymous with the item itself.

"Hoover" only works in the UK, but some other examples are - Q-Tip, escalator, Band-Aid, Kleenex, thermos, zipper, cellophane and Xerox.

From Wikipedia:

A genericized trademark (also known as a generic trademark, proprietary eponym) is a trademark or brand name that has become the colloquial or generic description for (or synonymous with) a general class of product or service, rather than the specific meaning intended by the trademark's holder.
Reply:This can be called a few different things:

Generized Trademark

Generic Tradermark

Proprietary Eponym

What is the English or common name of siapo tree?

In the Philippines it is called "siapo tree". A tree with a very useful small branches used in making a Christmas tree. Some named it in English a willow tree but i think willow is a different tree.

What is the English or common name of siapo tree?
The Siapo Tree (Broussonetia papyrifera) is often called the Paper Mulberry Tree. It belongs to the Moraceae Family, which includes the true mulberries. Willows belong to a quite different family, the Salicaceae.

What are common names of weather phenomena?

Nearly all weather is phenomenon, and I'm not trying to be vague or rude.

There are multiple factors that go into the making of a cloud alone. So when you get a Low pressure system that dumps flooding rains on one part of the country and a blizzard pummels the other part of the country from the same system, that is weather phenomenon.

A tornado is probably at the top of most people's lists. It's cliche- but no one really knows what how a tornado forms, what's inside, etc...

Another big phenomenon is a hurricane. Yea, scientists figure 'em out, and track 'em, but they still cause mass devestation. That is phenomena.

As mentioned above, lightning is a definite phenomena. And yes, scientists have given educated guesses and make lightning strike their poles. But the exact source and cause of it is unknown. The list is endless.

What are common names of weather phenomena?
La Nina and El Nino El Nino brings storms to the southren part of California and La Lina brings storms to the Northwest and in 1997 98 that was a strong el nino epsiode. La nina is the oppiste of El Nino.
Reply:clouds

and so on
Reply:Hydrometeors like rain, hail, fog etc,Lithometeors like dust ,sandstorm, haze, smoke etc,Photometeors like lightning,Electromteors like lightning, thunder etc are the common weather phenomena.
